  4. This compressed file contains the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter for use 
  5. with Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 5.0c for Windows. This converter 
  6. allows you to convert your existing Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 or 5 for Windows 
  7. files to Microsoft Excel 5.0 files. 
  8.  
  9. Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows shipped without the ability to open or save 
  10. files in WK4 format. The file converter provided with this application note 
  11. allows you to use Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or 5.0c to open WK4 files. 
  12. This file  converter does not provide the functionality to save a file in 
  13. Microsoft Excel to the WK4 file format.

  15. NOTE: The Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter does not work with Microsoft Excel 
  16. for Windows NT.

  18. INSTALLING THE LOTUS 1-2-3 WK4 FILE CONVERTER 
  19. ============================================= 
  20.  
  21. To install the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter, you must first run the 
  22. SETUP.BAT file to copy the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter Setup files to 
  23. your computer's hard disk drive. You must then start Microsoft Windows, 
  24. and run the SETUP.EXE program to install the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter
  25. on your computer.

  27. To copy the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 Setup files to your computer 
  28. -------------------------------------------------------- 
  29.  
  30. 1. Copy the SETUP.BAT file and the _MSSETUP.EX_ file to the directory to 
  31.    which you want to copy the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter Setup files. 
  32.  
  33. 2. From this directory, run SETUP.BAT. 
  34.  
  35. This batch file copies the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter Setup files to a 
  36. DISK1 directory in the directory from which you ran SETUP.BAT.

  38. The DISK1 directory contains the following files:

  62. Microsoft Excel directory. The rest of these files are used to run the 
  63. Setup program.

  103. The WE1130 disk included with this Application Note contains a Lotus 
  104. 1-2-3 WK4 file converter for use with Microsoft Excel versions 5.0,
  105. 5.0a, and 5.0c for Windows. This converter allows you to convert your
  106. existing Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 or 5 for Windows files to Microsoft
  107. Excel 5.0 files.
  108.  
  109. Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows shipped without the ability to open or
  110. save files in WK4 format. The file converter provided with this
  111. Application Note allows you to use Microsoft Excel version 5.0, 5.0a,
  112. or 5.0c to open WK4 files. This file converter does not provide the
  113. functionality to save a file in Microsoft Excel to the WK4 file
  114. format.

  116.   NOTE: The Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter does not work with
  117.   Microsoft Excel for Windows NT(TM).

  119. To install the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 converter
  120. ----------------------------------------

  122.   NOTE: If you are running Microsoft Excel from a protected network
  123.   server drive or if you want to install the converter to a location
  124.   other than the Microsoft Excel directory, see the "Alternative
  125.   Installation Method" section of this Application Note.

  127. 1. Quit Microsoft Excel for Windows.
  128.  
  129. 2. If you received this Application Note on a disk, insert the
  130.    enclosed WE1130 disk in your floppy disk drive.
  131.  
  132. 3. In Windows Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  133.  
  134. 4. In the Command Line box, type <location>:\setup.exe and press ENTER
  135.    (where <location> is the floppy disk drive that contains the WE1130
  136.    disk or, if you received this Application Note electronically, the
  137.    disk or directory to which you downloaded the file). For example,
  138.    if the disk is in drive A, type
  139.  
  140.       a:\setup.exe
  141.  
  142.    or, if the downloaded Application Note is in the directory
  143.    C:\DNLOADS, type:
  144.  
  145.       c:\dnloads\setup.exe
  146.  
  147. When the Setup program is finished, a dialog box will appear,
  148. confirming that the WK4 file converter has been installed.
  149.  
  150.   NOTE: For information about installing the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file
  151.   converter from a directory on a network drive, and for more
  152.   information about using the file converter, see the README.TXT file
  153.   on the enclosed WE1130 disk or in the location to which you
  154.   downloaded this Application Note.

  156. When you run the Setup program, it copies the XLCONVW4.DLL file to
  157. your Microsoft Excel directory. The rest of the files included on the
  158. WE1130 disk are used to run the Setup program.
  159.  
  160. When you run the Setup program, if you receive an error message
  161. stating that Setup tried to create an invalid path or that Setup
  162. cannot find Microsoft Excel, use the method described in the
  163. "Alternative Installation Method" section on page page 2 of this
  164. Application Note to install the converter to a location other than the
  165. Microsoft Excel directory.

  167. To use the Lotus 1-2-3 WK4 file converter
  168. -----------------------------------------
  169.  
  170. After you install this converter, do the following to open your
  171. existing Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 or 5 files in Microsoft Excel:
  172.  
  173. 1. In Microsoft Excel, choose Open from the File menu.
  174.  
  175. 2. From the List Files Of Type list, select
  176.    Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 or 5 (*.WK4).
  177.  
  178. 3. From the File Name list, select the file that you want to open, and
  179.    choose OK.
